In cooperation with Helitrans, the Scandinavian Aerospace Academy has been given the great opportunity to train helicopter pilots. Helitrans and Scandinavian Aerospace have strong relationships that bring great benefits to the student pilots. Helitrans is Norway’s largest onshore helicopter company and has bases all over Norway.

In cooperation with Helitrans, you can now get partially sponsored education. You will get PPL(H)/ CPL(H) on R44 and Type rating on AS350. And that is precisely why you, as a student with us, can become part of the helicopter environment from day one. You can also get the unique opportunity to practice two seasons as a Task Specialist in Helitrans before or after completing your education.
The helicopter training does not require higher education, but you must be over 18, pass an online entrance exam, as well as a medical test at the Institute of Aviation Medicine in Oslo.

Fly to places, visit the family, see the house from the air, or let friends and family have a trip in the air they won’t forget! With a private helicopter license PPL(H) you can make your pilot dream come true!

With a PPL(H) certificate you can fly according to visual flight rules (VFR), that is, when you have sight of the ground. You are allowed to fly alone or with non-paying passengers. The most common type of helicopter to fly is the Robinson R44.

You can own a helicopter yourself, or via a cooperative. You can also hire helicopters on an hourly basis.

Course Details

What does it take to become a Helicopter Pilot?

PPL(H) Private certificate:

  • Applicants must be at least 16 years old at the start of the course.
  • Applicants are assessed after personal Teams interview and meeting.
  • Applicants must hold a minimum of medical class 2, issued by Aviation Medical Centre.
  • Start: Continuous and by agreement Information about the course; The course is carried out according to an agreed progress plan. The training consists of a theoretical and a practical part, which should preferably run in parallel. The exam is organized by the Civil Aviation Authority on announced dates six times a year. Candidates must have a minimum of 45 hours of practical flying.
  • Rights: As a PPL(H) holder, you are allowed to fly according to visual flight rules (VFR), with sight of the ground. You are allowed to fly with non-paying passengers (friends, colleagues family etc). You are not allowed to earn money on your flight. If you want to fly in the dark, a separate PPL(H) night program is needed.

For those who want to work as Commercial pilot – Helicopter. 

CPL(H) commercial certificate:

  • Applicants must hold a PPL(H) certificate.
  • Applicants must be at least 18 years old at the time of skill test.
  • Applicants must hold medical class 1.

The education entitles you to work as a commercial pilot, e.g. cargo pilot, sightseeing, photography, passenger transport and line inspection. The education does not give you the right to fly into the clouds, as required by offshore and the air ambulance. Then you need an instrument IR(H), this can be taken as an extension afterwards.

Rights: You can be the commander in commercial operations where two pilots are not required. In two-pilot operations, you can operate as co-pilot in visual conditions.

Duration: Approx. 1-year inclusive PPL(H) (variations may occur)

Technical Information

In order to be eligible for the Helicopter Pilot Program you need to fulfil all the requirements listed below:
Medical Certificate

Valid Medical Class 1 is required prior to starting your training. Medical Class 1 will be accepted from any EASA country. Do you need more information about obtaining an EASA Medical Class 1? Contact us.

License and Ratings

No previous license or ratings are required prior to starting the Helicopter Pilot Program.

Language Proficiency

In order to issue an EASA CPL license you will need to obtain a language proficiency level which follows the ICAO standard. The minimum level required to start your training is English level 4 (4 out of 6). This will be assessed during your pre-entry assessment.

Note: You need to know one of the 3 Scandinavian language fluently.

Admission requirements for integrated full-time studies

The helicopter training does not require the student to have a higher education beforehand. Applicants are assessed on the basis of practical competence – or study competence.

For students with a diploma or study qualification from upper secondary school:

  • Students must be 18 years of age to take the skills test (practical, final exam). This is in accordance with international aviation law (Part FCL).
  • Pass our online interview.
  • We recommend that all students complete a class 1 medical examination before starting school, regardless of whether you are applying for a PPL(H) or CPL(H) education. Medical class 1 must be in place before students can fly solo or take the final practical test.

Medical test:

All our students must hold medical class 1. 

Students who live far away can take the medical exam right up until the start of school. If, before the start of school, you provide documentation that you did not pass the medical test, you will be refunded any advance payment minus admin fee of 400 euros. These conditions are described in more detail in the student contract, which will all be sent after passing the entrance exam.

The entrance interview:

The entrance interview is free, and when the interview is completed, you will receive quick feedback on whether you have passed.
